Can Photography Courses change your life – well, yes they can – totally.
I had a lovely phone call yesterday from one of my photography students – I’ll just call him Harj at this stage. Harj phoned to tell me how much coming to me for a one-to-one photography course had changed his life. He came to Kirkcudbright early last year with a burning desire to change direction and become a professional photographer.
Could I help him achieve his ambition?
I spent a lot of time with Harj, explaining the difficulties as well as the wonderful opportunities professional photography can offer. I gave him a plan of campaign which he has followed to the letter.
My encouragement is paying off – within just a few short months of his one-to-one photography course, he is well on the way to achieving his goal. Sensibly he has not yet given up his ‘day job’ and is gaining experience ( that’s why I won’t give his full name yet). The big step will probably come in 2011 – that’s when Harj intends to become a full time wedding and commercial photographer.
I’ll keep you posted as soon as this happens with links to Harj’s new website.
I’m just as excited as Harj!
Happy New Year to all photographers everywhere.
I’m really looking forward to seeing old friends and new on my Photography Holidays and Photography Courses in 2011 – both here in Kirkcudbright and in beautiful Menorca.

Approaching the end of another year, this time I didn’t wish to be as sentimental as previous years. This is mostly due to having a strong feeling that I am definitely “on my path” and work has started and I am currently in the thick of it! Professional Photography.
I am currently in the process of starting my own professional wedding photography business and Philip Dunn was one of the most influential people I could have met in 2010. His initial training session spurred me into action culminating in a life which at present is extremely busy whilst having a “day job” and starting my own business in the background. His words to me on New Year’s Eve were just as encouraging and realistic as they have been in the past, I regard him as an influential trainer and mentor.
I have found a great love and passion in photography and took on Philip’s advice and kept an initial open mind to whatever type of photography I could get involved with. I also tried to find other photographers I could work with to gain experience.
Whilst wedding photography (and portraiture) is the main area I wish to get involved with, I had planned to revisit Kirkcudbright for some ongoing training. I believe in doing something to the best of my ability and in doing so appreciate I will need to have ongoing training with professional photographers such as Philip who have great experience to share.
The biggest challenge I have faced up until now is finding the time to attend to everything, both in my day job, family commitments and now with starting a photography business. I am continuing to learn with different facets of the business and photography.
Philip is one of the tutors I will revisit in the future. You need to find people you can work with, who you can understand and who can teach you in a way that suits you.
All the best to everyone for 2011.
