Photography work experience needed

It is always a pleasure to work with a student who is keen to learn and passionate about photography. I’ve had just such a student with me today.

Harj flew up to Scotland from his home in London for a day of one-to-one photography tuition with me. We spent the morning indoors going through the basics of Light and Composition, and in the afternoon we put some of the theory into practise. I was very impressed by the effort Harj put into everything he did – and his endeavours paid off with what I hope will be a really worthwhile set of photographs.

Harj would love to hear from any London photographers needing an assistant on Saturdays or weekends. Wedding, studio, just about anything will interest Harj. He’s prepared to make the tea and carry the equipment – all he asks is experience and the chance to learn more about photography.

From what I have seen of Harj, I can highly recommend him to any photographer wanting a willing hand. He will also be a very pleasant chap to have around.

If you can offer Harj any photography work experience – please contact me and I will put you in touch with him.

More Photography Weekend images

Philip Dunn shows some more of the images taken by his photography students who attended his latest Photography Weekend Workshop in SW Scotland.

I was so impressed by some of the pictures taken by the group of photographers who came on my latest Photography Weekend Workshop here in Kirkcudbright that I just had to post some more pictures.

Starting with Patricia’s uplifting photograph of the butterfly. This is lovely – blue sky with puffy white clouds. Absolutely brimming with colour. This is one of the pictures Patricia brought with her to the Photography Weekend. I always ask my students to bring along some of their previous images – it’s a great starting point for the photography tuition.

Next comes Sue’s photograph taken during the photography weekend itself. Sue spotted the sheets of music on an old piano. She has kept the composition absolutely simple – and it is all the more effective for it.

I think the picture below is a knock-out. Paul took it when we were looking around Colin’s garden – see my previous post. It was very noticeable that Paul was seeing all sorts of novel and interesting images. He told me he would never have dreamt of taking this sort of photograph before he came on the Photography Weekend. That’s good to know. It means I have introduced another photographer to a particular way of seeing. Just look at the way Paul has captured that beautiful light.

Elaine produced this fabulous wildlife photograph of a cold and hungry heron waiting beside a frozen pond with her collection of ‘previous’ portfolio pictures. I think it is excellent. Beautifully captured. Perfect backlight and technically spot-on.

Bertie the photographer’s dog

You may remember that in my recent post Who ate the photographer’s dog’s breakfast? I wrote about Bertie – who belongs to Sue, a photographer who came on the latest Photography Weekend.

Photoghrapher's dog with dead chickenI am in receipt of news about Bertie the photographer’s dog.

Sue emailed with me a snap of Bertie with his latest present. She said:

“I bought him the flying chicken – big mistake, I spent more time in the trees retrieving it than I did on the ground!! he looks so funny when he is walking round with it.”

Where, I must ask, are the photographs of Sue up the tree. Also, how did the chicken get up the tree in the first place. It doesn’t look particularly aerodynamic to me. I have attached Sue’s picture of Bertie the photographer’s dog with a grounded chicken.

We do all we can to smooth the way for our photographers when they come on a Photography Holiday or Photography Workshop. For instance, Sue, one of the photographers who came on our latest Photography Workshop, was very reluctant to leave Bertie behind for her weekend in Kirkcudbright.

Bertie the photographer's dogBertie (that’s a photo of him on the left) is very special to Sue. He’s a rescued dog and, from what we learned later, probably the luckiest and most pampered pooch in the world.

Anyway Sue contacted us to say that she would love to come on the Photography Weekend, IF she could find suitable accommodation for Bertie. None of your common-or-garden kennels for Bertie, mind. Sue was looking for someone to pamper him in the manner to which he had become accustomed.

Of course, we said we would enquire among the dog-lovers of Kirkcudbright to find a suitably comfortable billet for Bertie for the weekend. Meanwhile, Sue was conducting interviews of likely candidates for Bertie’s attentions in her home town.

Sue – and certainly Bertie – came up trumps. A billet was found with a couple who were prepared to accept Bertie into their home and who were even happy to invite him to sleep on their bed. Sue was delighted and came to Kirkcudbright for her Photography Workshop.

During our latest Photography Weekend our group of photographers became very close to Bertie. We learned all about him, and at one stage we organised a ‘conference call’ to him as we sat round the table for lunch – Sue always rang him at least twice a day. That’s Sue pictured below playing Mum and pouring the afternoon tea during a break on our Photography Weekend Workshop.

Photographer Sue - Bertie's ownerBertie didn’t say much when we called, it’s true, but Sue says he was probably overcome with emotion at the thought of having so many fans and speaking in public.

Bertie has a girlfriend called Miss Amber, who lives across the road. Bertie sits in the window so that he can admire her when she goes walkies. He sent round a love token once; some of his special dog biscuits. Sue wrapped them up nicely and put them through Miss Amber’s letter box. Unfortunately, Miss Amber’s owner ate them by mistake. Sue and Bertie hadn’t got the heart to tell him the truth when he said how much he enjoyed them.

Bertie has at least 18 balls to play with. Tennis balls. And when they are bounced he does what Sue describes as ‘vertical take-offs’ to try and catch them.

Sue has been set the task of photographing this athletic habit of Bertie’s, and I look forward to posting the results on the PhotoActive blog.

The wonderful thing about all this is that now Sue has found a comfortable billet for Bertie, we might see more of her on our Photography Holidays or Photography Holidays. We certainly hope so – it was great fun.

Photography Weekend Workshop images

We’ve just had another great Photography Weekend here in SW Scotland. A lovely group of keen photographers and some fantastic, sparkling weather. It was a smaller group than usual due to several cancellations because of snowy weather concerns elsewhere in the country.

Sue's beautiful picture of reflections in Kirkcudbright Harbour. Sue was using a brand new camera and had never used Manual Exposure Mode before in her life. This was a very difficult subject to meter correctly, but Sue got the exposure and composition absolutely spot-on. Well done Sue

The theme for the Photography Workshop was ‘understanding your camera’ and this included a morning of talks on how to achieve correct exposure, using ISO, White Balance (WB) and the attributes of different focal length lenses.

Colin's shed with the stove buring brightly

Patricia captured the warm glow of the burning stove in Colin's extraordinary garden shed. Again, the exposure was absolutely spot-on

We started Saturday afternoon by photographing the fishing boats and views from Kirkcudbright Harbour before moving into the town to photograph the colourful terraced houses. I set the group a couple of mini challenges and exercises and was really delighted at the way everyone managed to put into practise the things we had learned in the conference room that morning.

Kirkcudbright lantern at dusk

Paul had never used Manual exposure mode before he came on the Photography Weekend, but he was soon capturing some beautiful images - and every one perfectly exposed

Bearing in mind that few of these photographers had every ventured into the ‘unknown territory’ of using Manual (M) exposure mode on their cameras before, the number of less-than-perfect exposures was incredibly low. In no time at all, everyone was wondering why they had been so nervous about using Manual before.

Sunday morning was another sparkly day and we walked round to see our friend Colin – whose wonderful garden and shed is always a favourite subject for the photographers who come on our Photography Workshops.

I never cease to be astonished at the number of different photographs that result from these visits to Colin’s garden, and the crop of photographs from this latest visit was yet another delight. Thank you Colin for lighting the wood-burning stove and making us all feel so welcome.

Here I have posted just a few of the pictures taken during our weekend. My thanks to Sue, Paul, Elaine and Patricia for letting me post their photographs.

Tomorrow, I’m going to post about Bertie. Bertie is not a photographer, he’s a photographer’s dog – Sue’s dog, in fact. Apparently he’s a very special dog: he can do vertical take-offs, talks to his owner on his mobile phone and has 18 balls. Watch this space.

Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 ED VRII Review

January 17, 2010 by Philip
Filed under Philip Dunn's PhotoActive Blog

Philip Dunn reviews the new version of the ever-popular Nikon 70-200mm f 2.8 lens. The new Mk II version has new optics and an improved VR system.

The best rarely comes cheaply, and at a hefty street price of around £1800, that’s certainly true of the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 ED VRII. But there are some things in life that are worth the extra investment  - even if you have to cut down on other things and save up until you can afford them. This lens is lens is worth waiting for.
Nikon-70-200-f2.8-lens
The f2.8 70-200mm Nikon lens has been a firm favourite with professional photographers for many years. I think it has just got even better with this new version.
VR and AF controls
The optics have been redesigned to give even better performance and to meet the demands of full-frame sensors. There is an improved Vibration Reduction (VR) system which enables the photographer to shoot with shutter speeds up to for steps slower than might otherwise be necessary.
Two pairs of switches to control both VR and Auto Focus (AF) are positioned on the side of the lens and are easy to get at and positive to use.

nikon-70-200-f2.8-controls for VR & AF

The upper set of switches selects Manual or Auto Focus and also enables a limit on the focusing range. By toggling this focusing range switch, it is possible to select either the full range or limit the range from infinity down to 5 metres. This reduces any tendency the auto focusing might have to ‘hunt’.
The bottom pair of switches control the VR – On/Off and also Normal/Active. The Normal function is, as you might guess, for general subjects when you want to reduce camera shake. The  Active function is intended for fast moving subjects – panning, for instance, or shooting from fast-moving vehicles. Both these modes work very effectively.
Optics
The lens has seven ED elements designed to minimise chromatic aberration. Certainly my lens produces images that are noticeable free of colour ‘fringing’ along the boundaries that separate dark and bright parts of the image.
The Nano Crystal lens coating also seems highly effective in reducing ghosting and flare when pointing directly into strong sunlight.
Although the lens now has 21 elements it is in fact physically shorter than its predecessor. The moving parts of the zoom are all housed internally, so the focusing ring does not rotate the front element. This makes it much simpler to use polarising filters (77mm).
The optical performance of this lens is outstandingly good when used on my Nikon D700 which has the FX sensor.
Weather proofing
The lens mount has a rubber seal which really does help keep the camera and lens weatherproof – I have already put the camera to work in heavy snow and rain without and problems.
The lens comes complete with removable tripod bracket and lens hood.
Handling
I cannot fault the handling of the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It is superb – positive and silky smooth. It is however, quite a handful because it is a heavy piece of kit.
Verdict
All in all I reckon this lens is absolutely excellent in just about every aspect.
