What has Kirkcudbright got to offer photographers?

The River Dee

What a place to take photographs... it seems that Kirkcudbright has just about everything. I can't always guarantee wonderful light, but I can promise a wide variety of subjects, and the River Dee, which runs right through the town is one with tremendous possibilities. Weather permitting, we are almost certain to spend some time along the river. I can even arrange for a trip on 'The Lovely Nellie' if you want to take your camera afloat, but this will cost a little extra.

The river has a huge tidal range that can leave great mud banks exposed when the tide goes out. Then wading birds of all descriptions make their way along the mud - even the cows get in on the act.

Kirkcudbright sits about three miles up-river from Kirkcudbright Bay, which opens into the Solway and the Irish Sea. The channel twists and turns and almost dries at low water. Vessels can usually only navigate up to Kirkcudbright after half tide.
