Photography courses in winter

In the winter months, when it is going dark late in the afternoon, you may find yourself doing exercises in mixed light. The picture of the street lamp, right, in the High Street, is a simple example of how the glow of tungsten light can be mixed with the cold blue of fading daylight.

There's lots more information about how to use 'mixed' light, and colour temperature in the Students' Course Notes.

Photography courses with Philip Dunn
are based in
KIRKCUDBRIGHT - SCOTLAND'S ARTISTS' TOWN
What has Kirkcudbright got to offer photographers?

High Street - 2

This end of High Street - from the Tollbooth Arts Centre to St Mary's Street, was a favourite subject for the artists who came to Kirkcudbright 100 years ago.

Now the street is usually lined with parked cars - a real nuisance for photographers, but the cars do create situations that make students think very carefully about framing and composition. No bad thing when trying to learn the art of working in town with a camera, perhaps to gather a photo-essay.

A stone marking the position of the old town gate lies in the road just beyond the Selkirk Arms, where many of our students stay. The severed heads of rebels, criminals and traitors were once displayed on poles at these gates. Presumably as a warning to others. Things have come on a little in Kirkcudbright since those days.
