KIRKCUDBRIGHT - SCOTLAND'S ARTISTS' TOWN
Kirkcudbright is
pronounced 'Ker-coo-bree' with the emphasis on the second syllable.
What has Kirkcudbright got to offer photographers
Well, a very great deal... and that's not just my opinion. At the turn of the last century (around 1900), Kirkcudbright became home for a group of artists from Glasgow and Edinburgh. They came here to paint because the town offered tremendous visual stimulation; the light in southwest Scotland has a rare clarity, and they stayed because the surrounding Galloway landscape is stunningly beautiful. It inspired them.
Kirkcudbright is still home to a great many artists and craftspeople. It is not just a pretty place, though, but a working town, where the keen photographer will find worthwhile subjects at every corner - if you know how to look and recognise the value of the opportunities that present themselves. Fishing boats tie up almost in the town square. Pipers play in the square every week during the summer, and yachts sail up with the tide to the marina just below the town quay. There is always something to photograph.
If the weather is poor, then Philip's students concentrate on indoor photography with the emphasis on portraiture with available light. You may be photographing in old farm barns,, or taking portraits of a silversmith crafting fine jewellery. Whatever the situation, Philip will be working alongside you with guidance and encouragement.

KIRKCUDBRIGHT EXHIBITIONS

As a special thank you to the people of Kirkcudbright, who
are always so welcoming to my students, I now hold exhibitions of photographs
at the town's Tolbooth Art Centre. They attract hundreds of locals and visitors
to Kirkcudbright each year. Almost all the photographs are taken while working
alongside my students in the area.
