PERFECT BLEND OF HOLIDAY AND TUITION

This is the full text of the lovely letter from Ian Smith, who joined us in Menorca for a Photography Holiday. It confirms our view that we start these weeks with a group of students and end with a lot of good friends.

Ian very quickly earned the nickname 'Mr Cool' because of his laid-back, unflappable personality.

Dear Norene and Philip

I'm sorry it has taken me over two weeks to getting round to sending
you this e-mail. It's actually quite hard to believe that two weeks
have passed since departing S'Algar. The worst thing about a great
holiday is the return to reality and dealing with things that have
piled up while away - the price of enjoying yourself I guess. I tried
to remain 'cool' but not sure I managed it.

I've just been reviewing the photographs again and I can see a big
change in the consistency of quality in my photographs during the week.
Huge thanks. I think my brain is still aching with: 'light monkey';
composition - what's the focus of attention!; etc. etc. Went for a
walk this afternoon around Damflask reservoir; forgot to take the
camera which was more than a shame as the light became really beautiful
half-way round. Still I was able to practice 'viewing in rectangles'.
I think the biggest plus for me in terms of the learning is the
discovery of how and what I need to do to continue to improve - get to
know the camera(s) better and practice, practice and more practice.

So in terms of the learning and the gain in confidence to try new stuff
- the week at S'Algar was quite simply 'estupendo!' - cool too!

It's obvious too that a huge amount of preparation went into the
planning and organisation of the course and the variety of the planned
programme couldn't have been better. The way you managed to rearrange
stuff when the weather intervened was also above and beyond the call of
duty - and hugely appreciated by everyone in the group. Clearly the
fact that you have established trust and real friendship with large
quantities of beautiful Menorcans is a big help.

I loved the way that both of you encouraged us all, didn't have any
favourites and instilled a collective confidence to share and learn
from each other. This 'added value' doesn't happen by magic - to
pinpoint the skills you both used to enable the group to 'bond'
extremely quickly is actually quite difficult - because it was I think
a 'light touch' - in other words we didn't necessarily notice whatever
it was you were doing to enable the group to become more than just the
sum of its participants - whatever the 'magic' was that you used - get
it bottled!

You will have gathered by now that I am a huge fan of you both, I've
told (bored) loads of people about the experience, when I get my work
sorted for the future I'll be wanting to book some 1:1 time in
Kirkcudbright and S'Algar beckons again.

Thanks again for making the first week in October 2005 so memorable and
special.
Love you both
Ian
