Former Sunday Times travel photographer Philip Dunn is a professional photographer with over 40 years experience in photography and writing. Philip now runs photography courses, workshops and photography holidays in UK and Menorca, Spain. He has produced two how-to photography DVDs in co-operation with his son Christian
I've been a professional photographer and writer for over 40 years. My first picture was published in the Manchester Evening News when I was just 14 years old. At 15, working with glass plate press cameras, I was an apprentice on a local newspaper. I was the youngest staffman ever to join the Daily Express, where I worked for 15 years before being invited to work for The Independent newspaper in London. As a freelance, I worked for The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Mail on Sunday and other national newspapers. I then joined the Sunday Times as a features and Travel Photographer – 'the best job in the world'.
Working for just about every top national newspaper and magazine in the UK, I gained a reputation for my photojournalistic approach to landscape photographs and gently humorous pictures of people.
During my career, I've photographed and written about everything from the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland, an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, the ethnic mix of Mauritius, the Bedouin of the Syrian desert and the Coconut Dancers of Bacup; and everyone from Prime Ministers to the Royal family – and even the children who live in the rubbish tips of Cairo (the children were more interesting).
Major Photographic Contracts
I have completed many extensive book illustrating contracts for major book publishers such as Oxford University Press. On top of the actual photography, these contracts have involved organisation of everything from location research, lighting, casting and employment of large teams of professional models, hiring and working with make-up, continuity, stylist specialists and assistants.
I still accept commissions from media clients and provide creative PR Photography, Product Photography and Corporate Photography. Learn more about Philip Dunn's Photography services.
I often give talks and presentations for camera clubs and photographic societies when I am available. If you would like me to talk at your club please contact me.
I've won a string of photography awards including two times Features section, and three times News section of The British Press Photographer of the Year Awards; Features and News sections of the Ilford Awards. I'm the author of three books, and during my freelance career I've covered assignments all over the world for The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Good Housekeeping Magazine, The Radio Times, You Magazine, Saga Magazine, COI, Sunday Express Magazine and many more. I was one of the first photographers to join The Independent newspaper when it was launched in 1986. In the process, I've built a huge collection of travel photographs.
For ten years I've been running the highly successful photography courses and holidays here in Kirkcudbright, and also on the Mediterranean island of Menorca, Spain.
When choosing a photography holiday or photography course, always ask who is going to be teaching you. Find out just what they have done and who they have worked for – it's real professional experience that matters most – and the ability to teach, of course.
