Some of the thousands of photographers who have been to Kirkcudbright on One-to-One photography courses with Philip Dunn
This photography tuition and coaching is tailored to suit your individual needs. My students on these photography courses range from complete beginners to highly respected London professionals wanting to keep ahead of the game. Sometimes the photography tuition covers more than just photo technique – it involves confidence-building behind the camera…
Gill Ferguson, who now undertakes regular paid photography commissions, said about her photography course:
"You gave me something very special – the belief that I could do it. Thank you."
These practical and inspirational photography courses are for:
- All photographers over 16
- All levels: novice to experienced photographers
- All cameras: digital compacts to DSLRs
- All disciplines: landscape, portraiture to street photography
It is not at all unusual for the photographers who come to me to be soon working their way up the professional ladder. However, most people come for photography courses simply because they want to learn and get more pleasure from their photography and their camera.
It does NOT matter if you use a compact camera or top level DSLR camera – on these photography courses I'll show you how to take better photographs and how to have more fun doing it.
The photography tuition is non-geeky and easy to understand.
Each photography course is tailored to suit the individual photographer. Many photographers have a strong desire to understand and use the Manual settings on their camera, for instance, or perhaps you wish to improve your composition.
A typical full day course begins with a brief look at some of your previous pictures, often followed by a morning of discussion and tuition to suit your particular needs. We may discuss camera craft, technique, light or exposure.
Most afternoons are spent on location with you taking photographs with my guidance and help. You may be photographing interiors, landscapes or portraits depending on your requirements and photographic aims.
Just some of the aspects of photography you can learn on a One-to-One photography course:
- Learn the art of good photograph composition
- Learn how to capture the action on camera
- How focal length impacts on the narrative of your image
- Light direction and quality – how it can transform your photographs
- Get to grips with White Balance
- Understand exposure and take control of your camera
- Image editing how to make a good photograph better
- Depth of Field – how important is it?
- How to photograph people
- How to photograph landscapes
- Gain confidence behind your camera

"I have already been out taking photos this morning & was relieved to find I remembered my ISOs, and F stops etc, phew! After my day’s tuition I feel I can now begin to really enjoy my photography. You made everything so much easier to understand & I’m no longer bemused by my camera. A whole new world has just opened up and I can’t wait to start taking shots that I have control over instead of it being the other way around.
Richard Wright & Jenny Baptiste:
"I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for a fantastic day, both Jenny and learnt so much in the morning, but then had the most amazing time on the beach putting all the theory into practice. The weather was great, your tuition was superb and we had a lot of fun, which always makes it all the more enjoyable. Thanks again, and don’t be surprised to see us up in beautiful Kirkcudbright again soon."
"I've had a fantastic time – it's been everything I expected and more."

"Thanks for a great day! Like you said on the blog, I got out of it exactly what I wanted and more thanks to your brilliant teaching skills. I could have stayed all day at the waterfall practising, I realy didn't want it to end. Now I'm stressing as feel I've forgotten everything already!"
"It's been absolutely fantastic – I've learnt how to use my camera for the first time ever. Using the Manual Mode is great. I'll take different class pictures."

"I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful day and your warm hospitality. I have now learned how to use the manual settings and as well as going out and practising I promise never to use the Automatic ISO setting again. I leave the lovely town of Kirkcudbright with more confidence in my camera settings and an enthusiasm for photographic exploration."
Effie Galletly wrote: "Just a line to say thank you for such a great day on the 121. I thoroughly enjoyed the time and your patience in passing on much needed knowledge. I appreciated being on my own in a 'class' as it does give time for things to sink in a bit better. Again many thanks and thanks again also to Norene for a delicious lunch."
Julie Christie said about her day of one-to-one photography tuition: "…my big thanks are for the wonderful and invaluable learning experience I had today. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and felt very welcomed by you both in your lovely home."
Stuart McTavish: said about his photography course with me:
"You manage to explain photography concepts and points very simply where others have overly complicated the subject. Keeping it simple really allows you to look around more and focus on the pictures you want to take, instead of wasting time worrying about complicated theories to set the camera up."
Phil Hallam wrote: “Just a quick word to say thank you for an amazing day. I learnt more in one day with you than I have reading books or instruction manuals over the last 10 months.” After his one-to-one photography course, Phil Booked a Photography Holiday with me in Menorca.
