I've been a professional photographer and writer for almost 40 years. My first picture was published in the Manchester Evening News when I was just 14 years old. At 15, working with glass plate press cameras, I was an apprentice on a local newspaper. I was the youngest staffman ever to join the Daily Express, where I worked for 15 years before being invited to work for The Independent newspaper in London. I then joined the Sunday Times as their Travel Photographer - 'the best job in the world'.

Reputation
At The Sunday Times I gained a reputation for my photojournalistic approach to landscape photographs and gently humorous pictures of people. During my career, I've photographed and written about everything from an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, the ethnic mix of Mauritius, the Bedouin of the Syrian desert, the origins of Wigan Pier and the Coconut Dancers of Bacup; and everyone from prime ministers to royalty and the children who live in the rubbish tips of Cairo (they were more interesting).

I still believe that photography is great fun, and spend much of my time taking pictures for my stock library or just for enjoyment.

Awards
I've won a string of photography awards including two times Features section, and three times News section of The British Press Photographer of the Year Awards; Features and News sections of the Ilford Awards. I'm the author of two books, and during my freelance career I've covered assignments all over the world for The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Good Housekeeping Magazine, The Radio Times, You Magazine, Saga Magazine, COI, Sunday Express Magazine and many more. I was one of the first photographers to join The Independent when it was launched in 1986. I have completed many major contracts to illustrate books for Oxford University Press, Readers' Digest and other publishers. In the process, I've built a huge collection of travel photographs which are marketed under the name of PD Picture Library

I have been running the highly successful photography courses here in Kirkcudbright, Scotland's Artists' Town, for five years.

This is what Neil Coffey said about his course with Philip...

"I would definitely recommend anyone who wishes to develop their photo skills to do your course as I feel it has helped me to develop my composition skills and most importantly my understanding of light and how to use it to the best advantage. I am currently taking your advice and trying to put what I have learnt into practise..."
